The pandemic has had all sorts of consequences, especially in education where the new communication gap has become a recurring concern. In an attempt to create a small glimpse of the lost college life, arose the need of a medium to keep the students, the faculty and the alumni informed with the activities of the college and of each other. For this purpose, we found it best to revive our newsletter Surge, which is divided into three sections.
'The JJ Bulletin' is the main newsletter which will have updates and information about the various academic and cultural events and activities that are arranged by our college in an academic semester.
For our first issue, we have covered the activities of the college and the student body in the academic semester of June 2021- January 2022. This includes events like the Academic Exhibition, the Faculty Medal competition as well as the introduction of the other two sections of Surge- The Repository and The Inquiry, and more.

Academic Exhibition 2021-22
|
The scenes of the annual Academic Exhibition of Sir J.J.College of Architecture will always be remembered by those who have been a part of it in the pre-pandemic era. And despite the hardships of remote learning, we kept up our hard work and adapted. This can be seen in the work put up on our first ever virtual Academic Exhibition.
This Academic Exhibition showcases the work of students, across all batches, done in the academic session of 2020-21. This year, we saw some excellent work done in the Architectural Design Studios on topics such as the design of a Grain Mandi in a rural context to the design of a Museum Campus and many more. You can see the creative explorations of the students by visiting the Creative Workshops projects of the First Year batch and the College Project work of the Third Year batch, where you will see intriguing projects like an entire comic dedicated to life in the pandemic! The Exhibition also consists of the Design Dissertation Thesis works of the Fifth Year, which consists of in-depth study and design of projects like River Yamuna Experience Centre, Skill Development Centre and many more. The best part about an online exhibition is it’s permanency. If you haven’t done so yet, do visit our Academic Exhibition of 2020-21 at https://sjjcoastudentcounc.wixsite.com/academicexhibition |
Manan- January
|
Manan is our talk series started for the exchange of ideas and thoughts between students and professionals. Starting in 2019, we had a number of excellent speakers including Ar. Arjun Malik, Ar. Rahul Kadri and more. To continue the spirit of learning brought about by these talks in the online medium as well, from 2020, Manan was made into a webinar series with its Second Edition featuring our distinguished Faculty members and Alumni. In 2021, the Third Edition of the talk series had excellent architects and design firms like Sameep Padora and Associates, HundredHands(with Ar.Bijoy Ramachandran and Ar.Sunitha Kondur. You can view our previous talks here.
For the month of January, 2022, we were honoured to have with us Ar.Madhav Joshi, founder of the firm, ‘Ar.Madhav Joshi and Associates’. The firm has varied projects under their belt, incorporating a minimalistic school of thought including the urbane workplace, the retreat, and integration of office buildings and a luxury hotel, some of which he shared with us. Madhav sir believes that architecture should respond to the region. His experiences from his birthplace Wai had a frequent mention; which clearly shows us the influence the learnings from the city have over his designs. Here's a link to the talk. |
Highlights from the Repository
|
We have a lot of activity by our students, faculty and our alumni that is quite notable and we found it best to compile as many as we can in one location on our website, which we are calling. ‘The Repository’.
Here’s some of the achievements of our students currently featured in The Repository-

Introducing the Inquiry
|
As young architects, it is a very important part of our job to question our role in today’s built environment and how our actions have an effect on the future of our built spaces. With this mind, we are starting an entirely student-led Research programme called, ‘The Inquiry’. Under this, we’d be looking at various topics about design and the built environment.
Currently, we are looking at the urban design model of the '15-minute city', and questioning its relevance in response to space and time, particularly to the Indian peri-urban context. You can find the Proposed Scope of the research as discussed on one of our first meetings here. If you're a student or recent graduate of our college and would like to be a part of this research project, write to us at- [email protected]. You can also write to us if you have any suggestions, queries or feedback! |

Revisit the Campus
|
We are thrilled to announce the onset of ‘QuickWitt’ an architectural quiz launched by our Student Council, for all curious minds out there.
The theme of the quiz revolves around revisiting our very own historic campus, appreciating its rich history and culture. The quiz briefed students through various interesting facts, and tested their awareness among students and the enthusiastic participants, as to how well they know their college. 'Did you know that Achyut Kanvinde, our alumni, went to train under master Walter Gropius at Harvard and was one of the masters who brought back the Bauhaus influence to India?'. The quiz expanded the knowledge base of the participants with many more such interesting trivia that facilitated the appreciation and awareness with regards to the history of our campus. VIsit the highlight section under 'Quick Witt' on our official Instagram page @sirjjcoa to stay updated with the quiz. |
Gender Neutrality workshop by ETHOS
|
In November 2020, our college was invited to be a part of ‘Designer's Know Your Duties LIVE Workshop with Michael Foley on Gender Sensitive Design’ conducted by the organisation Ethos. A group of 40 students across all batches represented the college in this inter-college workshop, with colleges like IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati and 6 other colleges from all over India participating.
This Live Collaborative Studio with Mentor Michael Foley was an effort to sensitise young designers towards the topic of gender and its implications in design. In the course of 4 sessions, the students brainstormed and collaborated on designing a street furniture design while looking at the design considerations of safety, hygiene and accessibility. The work presented by our students was highly appreciated by the studio instructors and it was a very enriching experience for the participants. |
