SOCIAL DISTANCING HOUSING BLOCK COMPETITION BY NONARCHITECTURE- STUDENTS' ENTRY SELECTED AS GENERAL PICK
|
The ‘Social Distancing Housing Block Competition’ held by NonArchitecture posed a challenge to imagine new dwelling models through varied creative architectural design and feasible innovation.
‘Back to Square One’, the entry made by Devi Kulkarni and Nitin Mhapsekar (Batch of 2022) is featured on the NonArchitecture website as their Journal Pick. You can view it here- https://www.nonarchitecture.eu/2021/11/04/back-to-square-one/ The project caters to the needs of the urban youth population that temporarily moved back to their native places due to the lockdown by providing sufficient private open space with one's residence. The entrance to each house is from a balcony, where one would sanitise oneself before entering the residence. This entrance also provides a touchless delivery system, allowing packages to be delivered through the balcony. The internal household organisation without partitions makes daily activities and cleaning more efficient. A rooftop park with socially distant seating and a jogging track is a space for better social interaction. The project was developed considering various aspects like touchless delivery system, easy functioning of daily activities, need of open free space and sky, need of natural cross-ventilation, social interaction, and mental well-being. |
SOCIAL DISTANCING HOUSING BLOCK COMPETITION BY NONARCHITECTURE - STUDENTS’ ENTRY SELECTED FOR THE COMMUNITY AWARD
|
The ‘Social Distancing Housing Block Competition’ held by Non-Architecture posed a challenge to imagine new dwelling models through varied creative architectural design and feasible innovation.
‘Alchemy’ , the project entered by our students Ayushi Thakur, Tapasya Vagal, Vaishnavi Parmar, Maria Ujjainwala(Batch of 2024), won the Community Award for this competition. Here’s a link to the NonArchitecture website where it is featured- https://www.nonarchitecture.eu/2020/10/29/alchemy/ In their project, they have tried to alchemize a residence for a new normal by channelling healing through architecture. The concept of the project centres around the creation of physical voids, an essential aspect of the required physical-distancing norms in a pandemic society. The amalgamation of the voids is done through open-plan public spaces with sufficient cross-ventilation and biophilia, which tackles issues concerning contamination and encourages safe social interactions. The project was developed taking into consideration the need for low-cost housing for localities like slums. The carpet area of the units was reduced for efficient usage of available space, each unit was nurtured as if it was living and evolving as needed, the open-to-air balconies served various functions throughout the day and increased opportunity for neighbour interaction. The voids and units come together to ensure the well-being of mental and physical health. |
ETHOS - TRANSPARENCE 2019 -STUDENT SELECTED AS THE SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
|
Our student, Tanya Deegoju (Batch 2022) is the Scholarship Winner for ‘Ethos - Transparence 2019’, a competition organised by Saint Gobain, India. Click here to view the work.
She portrayed her calculated approach to design by proposing her project named - Hawai Jahaz, an integrated micro-wind turbine. With extensive and rational research, she has transcended the boundaries of architecture into the domains of mechanical engineering, climatology, aerodynamics, and material study. This amalgamation of research areas has borne a workable and flexible facade system. She has weighed the pros and cons of the real-world system and thereby attempted to tackle challenges by software analysis, prototype test runs, and definitely through her expertise, dedication, and sheer perseverance. The idea of this project is to enhance a building’s sustainability. It aims at making a façade system that can harness the wind power, and simultaneously navigate the solar heat effect on energy consumption inside the buildings due to the cooling load. This clean, high potential, space-efficient and the non-polluting idea of using Vertical Axis Micro Wind turbines surely aims to make energy production and saving a domestic activity. |

Here’s the link to the website where his entry is featured along with other finalists- https://architizer.com/blog/competitions/one-drawing-challenge-2020-finalists-part-2/
His entry looks at a world where humans are in gluttony to expand upwards to take their civilization further and closer to the sky, where the definition of ‘home’ and ‘land’ is redefined. A world that sees humans free up in the sky, away from the tortures of Earth, and by doing so, have given back to the Earth its former glory with open, untouched greenery, except the metal columns that hold the whole grid of civilization. Humans are thus isolated in their land yet not alone, stationary yet moving, in the air but still connected to the ground. |

IITBHU - FMC WEEKEND - ENTRY SELECTED AS WINNER
|
The Animation Club of IIT BHU posed a challenge in the FMC Weekend for participants to create a complete animation from a simple animation in their own style to test their creativity. Atharva Salaskar (batch of 2023) secured first place with his concept of evils of war and the ruination caused because of it.
The design, ‘Realm of Wonder’ was based on the concept that war is an evil catastrophe that befalls humans. It brings havoc and destruction and causes nothing but sadness and pain. Man is a dynamic creature and it seems he can't stay content merely with works of peace but that does not mean morals and ethics are to be forgotten. In the modern world where technological advancement may allow even robots and machines to harbor feelings they might become more compassionate than humans are. This gives rise to the question: will humans ever become humans? |

Trevin D’Souza (Batch of 2024) participated in the One Photo Competition by Architizer and secured a spot in the top 100 for his entry, “The Kiss of the Morning”. To view the entry, click here.
The first light of the morning pierces through the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, one of the busiest and oldest stations in India. It is one of those rare moments when the station is almost empty, when one has the chance to look up and adore the huge steel trusses and columns while slowly drifting along the platforms, something impossible to do during the rest of the chaotic day. The magnificent height and expanse of the roof renders a breath of fresh air to the incoming crowds. It’s almost as if first light of the sun is a harbinger for the chaos that would ensue, the peace before the storm. An analogue to the character of the station as the beginning of the many train journeys that ferry the people of India across the country. These are those special moments in time where one can relish the beauty of a bygone era. |

The comic strip format instantly connects with the 'viewers' as they traverse through scenes through the eyes of the character. In this way the viewer gets elevated as the 'primary observer' who shares the character's vision or rather the illustrator's dream. As we approach the last scene, the illustration continues to leave an afterthought in the viewer's mind where one can't help but build their idea of 'a new home in an unfamiliar land'. |
