Orientation of The Batch of 2027

On 22nd November, 2022, a new batch of students joined us. The students were oriented by a short presentation, which gave them a glimpse of the upcoming five years in the course of architecture. It gave them a sneak peak of what they will be learning in their 5 year course followed by the works of the students. Along with academics, the students were also introduced to various extra-curricular activities like workshops, study tours, and competitions conducted throughout the year. The orientation helped the batch of 2027 prepare for the new journey in architecture.

Acharaya Prashant Talk

On 8th December, 2022 we were delighted to have acclaimed bestselling Author and speaker, Prashant Tripathi, also known as 'Acharya Prashant' for our college fest for an interactive session on "Fearless Living”. Students of our college had an interesting question- answer session with Acharya Prashant. Daily life issues of students like stress and anxiety, career, time management, courage, decision making, etc were addressed.

Karl Wadia, Senior Associate; Architect Hafeez Contractor and his talk is titled- “Life is not a competition”; dwelling into the depths of seeing new and energetic work from various firms and learning from them. We were extremely delighted to have Prof. Mustansir Dalvi, author, poet, translator and columnist, conduct an insightful seminar, on 12th December, 2022 at the Claude Batley Gallery, introducing students to the realm of architectural journalism. The Seminar brought to light the nuances and distinctions of architectural journalism and its effect on the readers and the society as a whole, and the accountability and responsibility of its practice and use. -Darpan Shah |
Sketch Walk: Sujyot Parkhe

One of the prime reasons for architectural significance of the DN Road is the heritage buildings around. And what could be better for an artist than exploring the city on foot and sketching every bit of it.
One such sketch walk was conducted by Artist Sujyot Parkhe, Alumnus of Sir JJ School of Art. Sujyot sir and our students traced the route starting from Flora Fountain to Rajabai Clocktower. Sujyot sir having a fellowship in Sir JJ School of Art, taught how to capture light, shadow and texture of architectural details during live sketching. It was a great experience for students to be able to capture details of these beautiful buildings that they otherwise would have missed. - Gauri Raut |
Production Design: Ar. Nikhil Kovale and Ar. Abhinay Deo

Production design - a talk led by our alumni Ar. Nikhil Kovale and Ar. Abhinay Deo where students got to know about the influence of architecture in film making. The seminar explored different visual elements of production design and their effects on the screen. How a certain element can make a film completely change. The effects of color on the mood and set of the film along with the sound effects. The example given for it was of the movie 'thappad' whose production design was done by Ar. Nikhil Kowale. He talks about how difficult it can be to find the perfect house for the characters. As an architect he makes sure everything is on point. Ar. Abhinav Deo also shared his experience after being a part of the industry since a young age. He talked about the movie 'Delhi Belly' which was directed by him. He shares the difficulties he faced while setting up a room for college going students. The seminar was a quick insight into the world of television by the makers themselves.

In conversation with Anupama Kundoo was a talk moderated by Prof. Mustansir Dalvi. She completed her degree at Sir J.J. College of Architecture. The talk included insights into innovation and socio-economic abundance that results from research and investment in materials and building techniques. She also shared the unseen side about her project at Auroville and about the full sized replica of her Wall House exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. Her experiences about the college and memories had a frequent mention, which added to the lively atmosphere.

Semester IV Electives

SEMESTER IV ELECTIVES
The Semester 4 elective sessions took place from January 9th to January 12th, 2023. Students had the opportunity to choose from engaging topics such as Understanding Charcoal, Calligraphy, Soap Carving, and Origami. In Understanding Charcoal, Ar. Hemangi Kadu, an esteemed alumni of our institution, guided students through the art of drawing by skillfully capturing the interplay of light and shadow on various subjects. Additionally, students had the privilege of visiting the Jehangir Art Gallery as part of this elective. The Calligraphy session, led by Prof. Shripad Mahatme, offered students an in-depth exploration of the art of beautiful writing. They gained insights into various calligraphic techniques and styles. Nitin Juvlekar, a respected figure in the field, conducted the Soap Carving session. Here, students delved into the intricate world of carving on the delicate canvas of soap, learning the artistry and precision required for this craft. In the Origami session, overseen by Shrikant Bhide, students were introduced to the captivating realm of Origami Tessellation. Through this experience, they gained insights into the intricate folding techniques that give rise to mesmerizing geometric patterns. Overall, the Semester 4 electives not only provided a diverse range of creative pursuits but also offered students valuable opportunities to learn from accomplished individuals in each respective field. -Ayushi Jadhao |
Mordern Matters Lecture: David Fixler

Sir J.J. College of Architecture in collaboration with Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai, Urban Design Research Institute, the Architecture Foundation, India conducted a lecture by David Fixler titled: "Modern Matters - The Global Renewal of Modern Heritage'' on 13th of January 2023, at the Claude Batley Gallery.

Conversation in Practice: Ar. Vikas Dilawari

As a part of our talk series MANAN, students had an opportunity to interact with Ar. Vikas Dilawari, conservation architect and founder of VDA. Discussion on conservation of buildings of historical importance, how to not burden fragile infrastructure and how to retain balance of development and conservation was executed by presenting several conservation projects that he worked on. The students got insights on restoration works at HiraBaug Dharamshala, CP tank, Haji Ali Dargah and Elphinstone building. The interactive session concluded with the ideology that "It's good not because it's old, it's old because it's good".

Republic Day Celebrations

As India celebrated its 74th Republic Day, we at Sir JJ college of architecture, continued our tradition with our annual celebration with great grandeur and pride.
The celebration started with hoisting the national flag in the presence of college staff, students and alumni, all dressed in traditional attire. The celebration is a reminder of our duty to commemorate the leaders of our country and it also instills a sense of pride and patriotism. The students also remembered the great late Ar. BV Doshi. In conclusion, the republic day celebration truly reflects our love for the country and our commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage. It continues to provide us with an opportunity to come together and celebrate the spirit of our country in our beloved campus. - Gunjan Kaul |

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of B.V. Doshi: An Exhibition of Architectural Marvels
In January, the world bid farewell to one of architecture's greatest visionaries, Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, affectionately known as B.V. Doshi. To commemorate his extraordinary contributions to the field of architecture and celebrate his illustrious life, an exhibition was organized, chronicling his journey from a young aspirant to an iconic architect. This event not only honored Doshi's legacy but also served as a source of inspiration for present and future architects. The exhibition showcased his life and work through informative panels and a display of some of his most significant projects. In addition, this special occasion brought together colleagues and architects from his renowned firm, Sangath, who also participated in a talk held in the CM Master Hall. - Buddhabhushan Lokhande |
CARNICUS: Freshers 2023
|
Freshers 2023 titled CARNICUS was a cordial welcome to the first-year students. The Freshers’ week was filled with games, tasks, and social events. Day one was the ‘Countdown Coaster’ where students had to say less and think more to make their team lead. Day two of ‘Treasure/Snap Hunt’ was full of tasks where students got to explore the college campus. Day three was ‘Escape the Room’ which threw unique challenges at the participants. On the final day the Talent Show gave freshers a chance to exhibit their talents. Ritika Puthran and Shivankar Rainak were crowned Miss and Mr Freshers’ 2023.

CTBUH Walk

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) organized an architectural walk for architecture students from various colleges. It provided an incredible opportunity for students to interact with architects, structural engineers, and MEP consultants involved in some of Mumbai's most iconic projects. The students visited One International Centre, One World Centre, and the Lodha Park site, where they discussed the intricacies of designing skyscrapers, the challenges faced, and the clever solutions integrated to create marvelous buildings. Later, the students strolled through the streets of Koliwada, catching a glimpse of the beautiful life within this community. Finally, they gathered for a sketching session with prominent architects from Urban Sketchers Pune, enjoying the scenic view of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link from Koliwada.

ARCUS: TATVA

Tatva- A convergence of elements as well as emotions of love and togetherness. We celebrated this year’s fest as a beginning of some journeys and to bid an adieu to some. Like every year we had a sports week of sharing the sportsman spirit in games like cricket and badminton. It was followed by a week of productive discussions, talks and workshops. The fest also included activities like hogathon and archimaster: a treasure hunt around south mumbai. It ended with expression of various talents of students through mukt, grooves and chords and verve. The last event, masquerade, was a culmination of everything experienced and gained through the process as we saw the students having heartfelt conversations, hearty laughters and slow dances at the circular forum. It was a journey of rediscovery of the elements around and those within.

Sandhya Sawant Memorial: Ar. Kirtida Unwalla

Sandhya Savant was a highly successful Conservation Architect and a notable alumni of Sir J.J. College of Architecture, who made a tremendous contribution in the realm of conservation practice in the city of Mumbai. In a sad turn of events, she passed away in 2006. Since then, supported by her family, UDRI has conducted an annual memorial over the years to commemorate her.
In regards to this Ar. Kirtida Unwalla, an active member of Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee and a practicing conservation architect conducted an interesting lecture on restoration of the Ismail building popularly known as the Zara building. This 111-years old building which was once owned by Ismail Yusuf Trust is now being adaptively reused by a hip new tenant ‘Zara’. It was an informative session on the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings. Lecturer delivered insights on the intricacies of restoration work and its importance. All in all it was a fruitful lecture in the memory of a great conservation architect. -Ayushi Jadhao |
'Tum Bolo Norway Sunega' Discussion

The circular forum dressed itself as the venue for this interactive talk, granting the minister of Norway a platform to communicate openly with the youth of India. Fascinated by the myriad youth power this country holds, the talk started with his expression of joy to have a large young audience being present for the interaction. 17 Sustainable goals were reminisced, awakening everyone of the projected year to achieve the goals, approaching near. The statement to maintain, as well as increase, the momentum of progress towards sustainable goals was relayed in the talk. Aligning the approach of every profession with the goals, was advised by the Minister with him stating the impact of architectural contribution to the same. Economic growth cannot be prospered at the expense of the health of the planet. With a humble request for the youth to be a part of the politics and to contribute to the initiatives to sustain the planet, the brief interaction concluded with a prospered vision towards a brighter future of the planet.

२७ फेब्रुवरी म्हणजे मराठी राजभाषा दिन. कवीश्रेष्ठ कुसुमाग्रजांचा हा जन्मदिवस. प्रतिवर्षाप्रमाणे या वर्षीही मराठी राजभाषा दिनाचे औचित्य साधून मराठी वाङ्मय मंडळाने एक अविस्मरणीय सोहळा आयोजित केला होता. शिवजयंती सुद्धा साजरी व्हावी या हेतूने कार्यक्रमाची रूपरेखा आखली गेली. महाराष्ट्राचे आराध्यदैवत छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज व विद्येची देवी सरस्वती यांच्या प्रतिमेला पुष्पहार चढवून, दीप प्रज्वलन करून व मानाने शिव गारद देऊन कार्यक्रमाची जोशपूर्ण सुरुवात झाली.
प्रथम वर्षाच्या विद्यार्थ्यांनी मराठी भाषे विषयी होणारी टाळाटाळ व मराठी बोलण्यात लोकांना वाटणारा कमीपणा यावर उजेड टाकून आपल्या भाषेचे महत्व एक सुंदर नाट्याद्वारे पटवून दिले. कुसुमाग्रजांची “कणा” ह्या कवितेने नाटकाचा सुरेख असा शेवट झाला.. “ मोडून पडला संसार जरी मोडला नाही कणा, पाठीवरती हाथ ठेवून फक्त लढ म्हणा!" छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या आयुष्याची प्रत्येक घटना सगळ्यांना प्रेरणा देत असते. द्वितीय व तृतीय वर्षाच्या विद्यार्थ्यांनी छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या आयुष्यावर एक संगीत नाटक प्रस्तुत करून शिवकालीन विविध घटना जीवंत करण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. यावेळी महाविद्यालयाचे प्राचार्य, सर्व शिक्षकवृंद आणि विद्यार्थी उपस्थित होते. मराठी वाङमय मंडळाकडून “काव्यार्थ” ही स्पर्धा आयोजित करण्यात आली होती. या स्पर्धेत दिलेल्या काव्य पंक्तिला आपल्या शब्दांची जोड देऊन पुढे कविता रचायची होती. या साठी महाविद्यालयाचे व्हिजिटिंग फॅकल्टी प्रशांत निळे सर व सुजित पाठक सर परीक्षक म्हणुन लाभले होते. Like every year, Marathi Vangmay Mandal organized a function to celebrate Marathi Raj Bhasha Din on 27th February, 2023. The outline of the program was designed to celebrate Shiv Jayanti as well. The program started pleasantly by offering garlands to the idols of Maharashtra's deity Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and goddess of learning Devi Saraswati' Students of first year showed the importance of marathi language through a play, highlighting the evasion and the lack of knowledge of people in Marathi language. The play ended successfully with Kusumagraja's poem "कणा". Second and third year students presented a musical play on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. "Kavyartha" competition was organized by our Marathi Vangmay Mandal. In this competition participants had to compose a poem by adding their own words to the given lines. I Square 2022-23

The way we choose to view the world, creates the world we see.
I Square was introduced to bring a new edge to design presentation. Here, students interpret existing designs and put forth their analysis and opinions. This time it was held in two parts, I-Square part 1: Consisting of the fourth and fifth year students teaming up to present thesis designs of the graduated batch. I-Square part 2 : Consisting of second and third year students teaming up to present semester 6 designs of the past year. The teams were mentored and judged by various experienced architects. Every team tried their best to break down a design to its core concept, weighing its pros and cons as well as putting forth their own ideas about the scope of modifications and improvements. Each design was well respected and accredited and through this competition, got a second life to it. It was a new experience for the participants as well as the audience and we came out better prepared as professionals and individuals. - Sakhi Mishra |
2nd Year Study Tour

From 17th January to 25th January 2023, second year students went on a 9 day study tour, where they visited 3 historic cities of Rajasthan - Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. Rajasthan is known for its grand havelis, amazing forts and intricately carved shrines. Students visited Kala Kendra, Albert Hall Museum, Amer Fort, Jantar Mantar, Jal Mahal and City Palace in Jaipur and carried out a case study of Bapu Bazaar in Jaipur, keeping in mind their forthcoming market design project for AD.
In Jaisalmer they visited Gadisar Lake and Patwon ki Haveli and the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls school designed by Ar. Diana Kellog, which is a spectacular example of modern architecture in local material. Students also enjoyed the desert safari, camel rides and Rajasthani folk music and dance. Between the journey from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur students visited the stone cutting mine where they saw the process of huge stones being cut into smaller blocks. In Jodhpur they visited one of the largest forts in India -Mehrangarh Fort. The tour gave students exposure to beautiful amalgamation of different architectural styles like Mughal, contemporary, Indo-Saracenic and of course Rajasthani. -Sanjivani Patil |

Proud graduates, adorned with creativity and knowledge, embarked on a new chapter in their professional journey. With hearts full of ambition and minds brimming with ideas, they stepped out to shape a world of innovative design.

1st Year Study Tour

FIRST YEAR TOUR
Students of first year of our college went on their first architecture study tour this March to Bhuj, Gujarat. The trip was 6 days in which they visited the LLDC Museum, Ajrakhpur Village, Gandhi Nu Dham, Mehfill-e-rann, and Smrithivan earthquake museum and the Rann of Kutch. Students saw the local artisans create copper bells, rogan art as well as carry out block printing, which they tried themselves too. Their main objective of the tour to Bhuj was the Earth architecture workshop conducted by Hunnarshala which taught us how to create sustainable as well as earthquake resistant architecture. There students got hands-on experience of building rammed earth walls, CSEB, adobe, wattle and daub walls, arches, domes and catenary structures. The workshop included understanding on the quality of soil and proportions to be used while construction. As a part of the workshop the students also visited a stone quarry and climbed up to Tapkeshwari hills to check out rock formations. - Seemab Mhate |
Semester II Electives

SEM II ELECTIVES
Semester II electives were conducted from 20th March to 24th March, 2023. Students were presented with an opportunity to choose from 5 enriching topics. ‘Art and Environment Design for Films and Games’ was conducted by Ar. Vishal Pawar. The elective focused on how films and games act as a medium for expression of culture. ‘Architectural Styles in India’ was an elective conducted by Ar. Kiran sutaria. Here students explored the various architecture styles in different states of India, Palace architecture, Kathkuni architecture, Rock-cut architecture, to name a few. In ‘Origami for architecture’ Prof. Preeti Vaishya taught different forms of origami and encouraged students to imagine them in a space as an architectural element on different scales. Mr. Nitin Juvalekar conducted ‘Glass painting on acrylic sheet’ . In this contemporary medium of art students tried their hands on different types of glass paints on different glass bases. ‘Experimental calligraphy’ was an elective conducted by Vaijayanti Ma’am. Participants were taught techniques for positioning and inscribing words through calligraphy. They also made letter models in different fonts. - Pranjal Patil |
