Architecture Modern: When Art Deco meets Bauhaus
|
This year marked the 30 years of the Indo-Israel diplomatic relations. To commemorate this event, the consulate General of Israel in Mumbai, the Art Deco Mumbai and the Bauhaus centre Tel Aviv, in association with Sir J.J. College of Architecture, organised an exhibition from the 10th June 2022, to the 22nd June 2022, featuring the various architectural similarities and connections between the Bauhaus Style of Architecture of the ‘White City’, a world heritage site in Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Victorian Gothic and the Art Deco Ensembles, a World Heritage Site in Mumbai.
The exhibition also featured a Seminar on 10th of June, 2022, to understand the striking commonalities and the subtle differences that forge a cultural and architectural bond between the two countries miles apart. It threw light on the cardinal bond between the countries’ rich history. We are thankful to Art Deco Mumbai and the Bauhaus Centre for collaborating on such an informative exhibit, opening a world of dialogue and possibilities. -Darpan Shah |

Building Services Study With Academy of Architecture
|
Visiting sites physically and understanding the structure is very important while studying architecture, and one part of it is building services. A group of students of Semester 9 visited Welingkar Institute of Management, Matunga on 17th July, 2022 along with 4th year students of Academy of Architecture(AOA), to study building services. They were accompanied and guided through the campus by Ar. Vikas Joshi, one of our visiting faculty who was also the MEP and services consultant for the building.
The site visit went about by going through areas in the building like the classrooms, auditorium, etc. to understand various services like firefighting, acoustics, HVAC, advanced services like building management systems, and smart classrooms. Discussions were done as to about the architecture of the building and how the services that were added later were designed to suit the existing structure. The students then later presented their site visit as a case study to the remaining students of the fifth year. -Gandhali Dixit |

I-Square: Episode I

We begin to learn wisely, when we are willing to see the world from other people’s perspective.
Being able to convey your thoughts is a very important skill in the field of architecture. Not only is it a test of your comprehensive skills, but also presentation skills. I-Square is a platform to explore design and interpret it in your own way. An opportunity to reflect upon a vision through the dispersed perspectives, as the way we choose to see the world, creates the world we see. The competition, held on 22nd and 23rd August, 2022, saw 6 teams compete against one another to win the ultimate title by presenting some of last year’s best thesis panels. Manan- Harsh Soneji and Pratha Bhagat
|
After two years of Manan being conducted and attended across the screens, we finally once again have an in-person edition of this series.
We were glad to have Ar. Harsh Soneji and Ar. Pratha Bhagat, co-founders of the firm, Studio MAT architects, based in Mumbai; for the start of this new inning. Being highly driven by the works of Bijoy Jain and his contributions in minimalism, Ar. Harsh Soneji continues to quote him, "Architecture is not about an image, it is about sensibility.” It was surely an amazing experience, as they provided an insight on their personal learnings as a part of the acquaintances they’ve had previously. From discussing their projects like ‘Field house’, ‘Hill house’, ‘House of two courtyards’ and more, to technological advancements that happen when one starts understanding the project and studies the information present at their disposal and the effect of pandemic to their practice as they face the challenges while they try to move ahead, it was all worthwhile. -Yash Joshi |

Manan: Ar. Pooja Ugrani
|
For the month of September 2022, we were thrilled to have Ar. Pooja Ugrani with us. She is currently working as an associate professor at the School of Architecture, REVA university, Bangalore.
Giving us an insight on “What Entrances Tell Us” she shared the findings of her research about the boundaries of a space, the interactions through them, the dwelling in that space and the various markers linked with them. It opened a new horizon as to how we not only make the confined space our own but also the boundaries of it, too, unknowingly become our own space which gives us an identity, an ice breaker into our actual dwelling space. -Tanaya Borate |
Electives: Semester 5
|
The electives for students of semester 5 commenced on 3rd October for 4 days. The students could choose from a variety of topics.
Hide and Seek conducted by Ar. Kunal Panchal discussed the hidden expenses of a project, which helps in estimating whether the project is feasible. The final assignment required the students to estimate the cost of the Clubhouse semester 5 design project after learning about the numerous elements that either directly or indirectly affect project costs. Project mapping conducted by Ar. Prathamesh Patkar and Ar. Kartik Gala with the students created the facade of our college building, with help of various software like Pepakura, resolume, rhino, etc., and projected humans on it, illustrating the daily activities occurring on the campus. Rhino and Grasshopper by Ar. Kunal Mokasdar taught the students modelling in the software. Over the course of 4 days, the students learnt and created pavilion models with seating underneath as their final assignment. Complex Geometry in Architecture, conducted by Ar. Mahek Khan discussed the different types of patterns used in Islamic Architecture and taught students various fold patterns that were later inculcated in small design assignments like tile design and 2D and 3D model making. Architectural Modelling by Prof. Dr. Vilas Ramteke taught the students the elements and principles of design, and using the amalgam of these students were assessed to make a 2D composition and evaluate the design of any architect they desired, which would enhance their design skills. -Aditi Kadam |
